The Webster Technique — For Pregnant Women
by Debra Behi

Most women want a natural, easy and complication free birth since this is what is always best for mum and baby.

However, sometimes due to other factors such as structural issues it is hard for the baby to find the best possible position for birth, resulting in breech, posterior or other birthing positions that may complicate delivery. This is why a Webster Technique check is recommended for any pregnant woman.

The Webster Technique formerly known as the "In-Utero Constraint Technique" or "Webster's Breech Turning Technique," was developed by Dr. Webster in 1978. For over 20 years, it has been highly successful in relieving intrauterine constraint and allowing babies to get into the best possible position for birth.

What is intrauterine constraint? Intrauterine constraint is defined as any forces external to the developing fetus that obstructs the normal movement of the fetus. Intrauterine constraint can prevent the developing fetus from attaining a head down vertex position and achieving a vaginal birth, resulting in cesarean section delivery or difficult and long deliveries.

Intrauterine constraint is caused by sacral misalignment causing the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments.

It is these tense muscles and ligaments and their constraining effect on the uterus which prevents the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth.

The Webster Technique is defined as a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nerve system and facilitates biomechanical balance in pelvic structures, muscles and ligaments allowing for an easier and natural birth.

This technique has shown to reduce the effects of intrauterine constraint, allowing the baby to get into the best possible position for birth.

In expectant mums presenting breech, transverse or posterior position, this technique has been successful in correcting the presence of sacral subluxation and therefore intrauterine constraint.

This technique is NOT the obstetric “breech turning” but a gentle and safe procedure. Chiropractic treatment is a safe, natural and gentle for conditions such as pubic symphysis pain, sciatica and many other pregnancy and pediatric issues.
